CUET 2026 will allow candidates to choose a limited number of subjects while filling the application form, as per guidelines to be released by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Subject selection will depend on the candidate’s Class 12 subjects and the eligibility criteria of participating universities. Aspirants will need to carefully choose language, domain, and general test subjects to match their desired undergraduate courses.
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2026 will allow candidates to choose a restricted number of subjects during the application process, as per norms expected to be outlined by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The subject selection process will play a crucial role in determining eligibility for undergraduate admissions across central, state, and participating universities. The official CUET 2026 notification is expected to provide clarity on subject limits, combinations, and eligibility rules.
Expected Number of Subjects in CUET 2026
Based on the existing CUET framework, candidates appearing for CUET 2026 are expected to choose from:
- Language subjects
- Domain-specific subjects
- General Test (if required by the university or course)
The total number of subjects a candidate can opt for is expected to remain limited, with the aim of reducing exam load and simplifying the admission process. The final subject cap will be confirmed once NTA releases the CUET 2026 information bulletin.
CUET 2026 Subject Selection Criteria
Candidates will be required to select subjects based on:
- Subjects studied in Class 12 or equivalent
- Undergraduate course requirements of participating universities
- Eligibility norms specified in university admission brochures
Selecting subjects not studied in Class 12 may lead to ineligibility at the counselling or admission stage, even if the candidate qualifies in CUET 2026.
Language, Domain Subjects and General Test Rules
For CUET 2026, candidates are expected to:
- Choose at least one language subject
- Select domain subjects relevant to the intended course
- Opt for the General Test only if mandated by the chosen university or programme
Each university will release course-wise subject requirements before the start of admissions.
Important Instructions for CUET 2026 Aspirants
Candidates planning to appear for CUET 2026 should:
- Review university-specific eligibility criteria before finalising subject choices
- Avoid opting for unnecessary subjects to minimise exam stress
- Ensure selected subjects align with admission requirements
- Carefully read the CUET 2026 information bulletin before submitting the application form
Changes to subject selection may not be allowed once the correction window closes.
What Happens Next?
