The Government of India will establish three new Dr. Ambedkar Chairs under the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation Scheme at Mumbai University, Jaipur National University, and GB Panth University of Technical and Agriculture Sciences. The move aims to strengthen research, teaching, and outreach on the life, philosophy, and contributions of Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, as well as issues related to social justice, equality, and empowerment of marginalized communities. Currently, 25 Dr. Ambedkar Chairs are active across various Central and State Universities. With the addition of these three new Chairs, the total will increase to 28 operational Chairs.
MoU Signing Ceremony
The new Chairs will be established through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the Director of the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation and the Registrar and Vice Chancellor of each university. Each MoU will have one representative from the Foundation and one from the respective university as witnesses. The ceremony will be presided over by Dr. Virendra Kumar, the Hon’ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. It will also be attended by Shri Amit Yadav, Secretary of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, senior officials of the Ministry, representatives from the Foundation, Vice Chancellors, and other distinguished guests from academia and research institutions.
Objective of the Dr. Ambedkar Chairs
The Chairs are designed to promote:
- Research and teaching on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s life and philosophy
- Extension activities in the field of social justice and equality
- Empowerment of marginalized communities
- Scholarly discourse on contemporary issues in social policy, law, and governance
By strengthening academic infrastructure, the government aims to support inclusive education and research, encouraging universities to create platforms for social empowerment studies.
