CBSE will implement on-screen marking for Class 12 board exam answer sheets from 2026. Class 10 answer books will continue to be evaluated in physical mode.
CBSE to Introduce On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Exams from 2026 as the Central Board of Secondary Education has announced a major change in its evaluation process. Starting with the 2026 board examinations, Class 12 answer books will be assessed digitally through the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
CBSE Class 12 Digital Evaluation from 2026
According to the official communication issued to principals and heads of CBSE-affiliated schools, the board has decided to shift Class 12 answer book evaluation to a digital platform. However, the evaluation of Class 10 answer sheets will continue in physical mode in 2026, following the existing practice. The move is aimed at enhancing transparency, improving efficiency, and reducing manual errors during the assessment process.
Benefits of On-Screen Marking System
CBSE stated that the introduction of on-screen marking will bring multiple operational and academic benefits. The system will help eliminate totalling errors and automate coordination processes, thereby reducing human intervention. Digital evaluation is also expected to speed up result processing and allow wider participation of teachers. Evaluators will be able to assess answer books from their own schools, ensuring that regular teaching activities are not disrupted. Additionally, the initiative will reduce transportation time and costs, contributing to environmentally sustainable practices.
Infrastructure Requirements for Schools
To ensure smooth implementation of the OSM system, CBSE has directed schools to arrange the necessary technical infrastructure. This includes access to a computer lab with a public static IP, computers or laptops running Windows 8 or higher, at least 4 GB RAM, updated internet browsers, Adobe Reader, reliable internet connectivity of minimum 2 Mbps, and uninterrupted power supply.
Support and Training for Teachers
CBSE will provide extensive support to schools and teachers during the transition. Teachers with OASIS IDs will be allowed to log in and familiarise themselves with the digital evaluation system. The board will conduct multiple dry runs, organise training programmes, release instructional videos, and set up a dedicated call centre to address technical issues. With the implementation of OSM, post-result verification of marks will no longer be required, significantly reducing manpower needs. CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 examinations annually in India and across 26 countries, catering to nearly 46 lakh students. The introduction of on-screen marking marks a significant step in modernising the board’s examination and evaluation framework.
