The Central Board of Secondary Education has announced a major change in the CBSE Board Exams 2026 question paper structure for both Class 10 and Class 12. The revised format is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to shift the focus from rote memorisation to conceptual understanding and real-world application. CBSE New Question Paper Structure 2026 Under NEP 2020
The revised assessment framework introduces a balanced distribution of question types to evaluate different learning outcomes. As per the official update, 50% of the total marks will now be based on competency-based questions. These will include case-based, source-based integrated questions, MCQs, data interpretation, and situational problem-solving formats. Apart from this, 20% of the paper will consist of select-response MCQs, while the remaining 30% will be constructed-response questions, including both short and long descriptive answers. This change ensures that a majority of the paper evaluates students on application of knowledge rather than direct recall. CBSE Board Exams 2026 Exam Schedule and Key Dates

On the opening day, Class 10 students will appear for Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic, while Class 12 students will begin with Biotechnology, Entrepreneurship, and Shorthand papers. The Class 10 examinations will conclude on 10 Mar 2026, whereas the Class 12 exams will continue till 09 Apr 2026. These timelines are expected to remain unchanged unless revised through a separate official notification.
Two Board Examinations for Class 10 From 2026
In another major reform under NEP 2020, CBSE has confirmed that two board examinations will be conducted for Class 10 students starting from 2026.
