Delhi schools have been ordered to remain closed after air quality levels in the national capital slipped back into the ‘severe’ category. The Delhi government has enforced Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 4 following a sharp deterioration in the air quality index across Delhi and adjoining areas.
As per the official directive, all government and private schools in Delhi will remain shut for students from Nursery to Class 5 until further notice. The decision has been taken in view of rising health complaints such as breathing difficulty, sore throat, and eye irritation reported by residents.
Delhi School Closure Details Under GRAP Stage 4
The school closure order applies strictly to younger students who are considered more vulnerable to air pollution. Authorities have stated that restricting outdoor exposure is necessary to safeguard children’s health during severe pollution episodes.
For higher classes, alternative arrangements have been put in place. Classes from Class 6 to Class 11 will function in hybrid mode, allowing students to attend either online or offline based on school instructions. However, students of high school and intermediate classes will continue with physical classes due to the proximity of upcoming board examinations.
Schools have been asked to ensure strict compliance with the order and communicate clearly with parents regarding revised academic schedules.
Office Operations and Work-From-Home Guidelines
Along with school closures, the Delhi government has also imposed restrictions on workplace operations. All government and private offices have been directed to function with only 50 per cent staff strength.
The remaining 50 per cent of employees must be allowed to work from home (WFH) wherever feasible. This measure aims to reduce vehicular movement and limit further deterioration of air quality levels.
Departments have been instructed to ensure smooth functioning of essential services while adhering to the reduced attendance norms.
Health Concerns Amid Severe Air Pollution
The air quality situation in Delhi has once again raised serious public health concerns. Residents across several parts of the city have reported symptoms such as shortness of breath, burning sensation in the eyes, headaches, and throat irritation.
Medical experts have advised vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, to avoid outdoor activities. The implementation of GRAP Stage 4 indicates that pollution levels have crossed critical thresholds requiring emergency measures.
What GRAP Stage 4 Means for Delhi?
GRAP Stage 4 represents the strictest set of anti-pollution measures. It is implemented when the AQI reaches severe or severe-plus levels. The plan focuses on limiting exposure, reducing emissions, and preventing further escalation of pollution.
Authorities have stated that the restrictions will remain in place until air quality shows sustained improvement. Citizens have been urged to follow advisories, limit travel, and cooperate with government measures.
The situation will continue to be reviewed based on real-time air quality data, and further decisions will be taken accordingly.
