CBSE has included QR codes on board exam question papers as part of its security system. The codes help verify the authenticity of papers and track their distribution. The feature is aimed at preventing paper leaks and maintaining exam integrity.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced QR codes on board examination question papers as part of its digital security system. The feature is designed to verify the authenticity of question papers and track their distribution during exams. This system has gained attention during the CBSE Board Exams 2026, after students noticed QR codes printed on several question papers, including the Class 12 Mathematics exam conducted on 09 March 2026. Authorities clarified that these codes are part of the board’s security mechanism and do not affect the validity of the exam papers.
Purpose of QR Codes in CBSE Question Papers
The QR code printed on a question paper functions as a digital identifier. It contains encoded information that allows the board to track and verify the document if required. Key purposes of these QR codes include:
- Authenticity verification: Ensures that the question paper is genuine and issued by the board.
- Paper tracking: Helps authorities trace the origin and distribution chain of each paper set.
- Leak investigation: Enables quick identification of the source if a paper leak or irregularity occurs.
- Security monitoring: Acts as an additional layer of digital security in the examination process.
Each QR code can store information such as exam subject, date, question paper set and printing batch details, which helps exam authorities track the movement of papers across centres.
How the QR Code Security System Works?
CBSE embeds QR codes in question papers before they are printed and distributed to examination centres. These codes are primarily intended for administrative verification rather than student use. The system works in the following way:
- A unique QR code is generated for each question paper set.
- The code is printed directly on the paper during the printing stage.
- If a suspicious copy appears online, officials can scan the QR code to identify its origin.
- The information helps determine which centre or printing batch the paper came from.
Such digital identification tools have been introduced to strengthen exam security and reduce the risk of leaks or tampering.
QR Code Incident During CBSE Class 12 Maths Exam
During the Class 12 Mathematics board exam on 09 March 2026, some students reported that scanning a QR code on the question paper redirected them to an unrelated online video. The incident quickly spread on social media. CBSE later clarified that the authenticity and security of the question papers remained intact, and the issue did not compromise the exam process. The board stated that the matter would be reviewed to prevent similar technical issues in the future.
Technology in Board Exam Security
Education boards in India are increasingly adopting technology to maintain transparency and prevent exam malpractice. QR codes, barcodes and digital tracking systems are now used to secure exam materials and monitor their movement. For CBSE, the use of QR codes is part of a broader effort to strengthen exam security, ensure fair conduct of examinations and maintain trust in the board examination system. Students are advised that the QR codes printed on question papers are not meant to provide answers or exam content, but are only used by authorities for verification and security purposes.
