CBSE has introduced a three-language formula from the 2026-27 academic session. Schools are replacing foreign languages with Indian languages. French and German are being discontinued in Class 6, with Sanskrit and regional languages becoming mandatory options.
CBSE has introduced a revised three-language formula for Class 6 from the 2026-27 academic session. Schools are beginning to implement the change by discontinuing foreign languages such as French and German. Under the new structure, students will study at least two Indian languages, with options including Hindi, Sanskrit, and regional languages.
CBSE 2026-27 Curriculum Changes in Language Policy
The updated CBSE curriculum makes it mandatory for students to study a third language from Class 6. This move aligns with the broader focus on promoting multilingual education. According to the new scheme of studies:
- A third language (R3) is compulsory from Class 6
- Students must study at least two Indian languages
- Greater emphasis is placed on regional and classical languages
These changes directly impact the availability of foreign language options in schools.
Schools Implementing CBSE 3-Language Rule in Class 6
Several CBSE-affiliated schools have already started applying the new policy. Institutions are informing parents about the revised language structure. In some schools, foreign languages like French and German are being removed from the curriculum. They are being replaced with:
- Hindi
- Sanskrit
- Regional languages
Schools have stated that the shift aims to strengthen cultural understanding and linguistic diversity among students.
Impact of CBSE Language Policy on Students and Schools
The new language policy is expected to reshape subject choices at the middle school level. Schools will need to restructure teaching resources and faculty availability. Students may have limited access to foreign languages at an early stage. However, the policy aims to promote proficiency in Indian languages and encourage multilingual learning. The implementation will continue across CBSE schools as they align their curriculum with the 2026-27 academic session guidelines.
