Assembly Passes Resolution to Establish National Law University in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution to establish a National Law University (NLU) in the Union Territory, paving the way for advanced legal education and research opportunities in the region.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that the proposed NLU is expected to begin functioning by April next year. Initially, the university will operate from rented premises until a permanent campus is finalized. A sum of ₹50 crore has already been sanctioned for the project.

While the final location is yet to be confirmed, Ompura in Budgam has been identified as a potential temporary site. The Chief Minister stated that multiple locations are being explored to ensure accessibility and infrastructure readiness.

The resolution, introduced by Bandipora MLA Nizamuddin Bhat, emphasized the need for a dedicated law university to promote high-quality legal education and research in Jammu and Kashmir. Several legislators, including Mir Saifullah and Sajjad Shaheen, supported the motion, suggesting Srinagar as an ideal central location for the institution.

MLA Sonawari Hilal Akbar Lone proposed an amendment seeking to establish the NLU in his constituency. After deliberations, the Assembly unanimously passed the resolution, marking a major step toward the creation of the National Law University in Jammu and Kashmir.
