UGC has asked higher education institutions to establish Student Service Centres for mental health support. The centres will provide counselling, psychological support and fitness guidance to students. Universities are also encouraged to promote sports, physical activities and campus engagement.

UGC Asks Colleges to Set Up Student Service Centres for Mental Health

UGC has directed higher educational institutions to establish Student Service Centres (SSC) to support the mental, emotional and physical well-being of students on campus. The directive aims to strengthen counselling support systems and promote healthier academic environments in universities and colleges.

According to the commission, the centres will function as a single-window support system that will provide guidance for academic stress, emotional challenges and mental health concerns faced by students.

Student Service Centres to Provide Counselling and Support

The proposed Student Service Centres will be equipped with trained counsellors, mental health professionals and physical fitness experts. These centres will help students manage issues related to stress, emotional adjustment, academic pressure and overall well-being.

The centres are expected to provide multiple forms of support such as:

  • In-person counselling sessions
  • Online consultations
  • Helpline services
  • Group counselling and awareness sessions

Institutions may also maintain records of students who are experiencing stress or vulnerability to ensure timely intervention and reduce dropout risks.

UGC Emphasises Physical Fitness and Sports Participation

Along with mental health support, UGC has also issued guidelines to encourage sports participation and physical fitness activities in higher education institutions. The commission has suggested integrating sports and physical activity into the credit-based evaluation system so that students participate in fitness activities as part of their academic journey.

Universities have also been encouraged to promote:

  • Yoga and meditation programmes
  • Adventure activities
  • Campus sports initiatives

These measures aim to improve resilience, overall health and student engagement on campuses.

Focus on Vibrant Campus Life

The commission has advised universities to create a supportive and engaging campus environment that encourages both academic and extracurricular participation. Institutions are encouraged to provide opportunities such as:

  • Cultural activities
  • Internships and field training
  • Community service programmes
  • Academic discussions and workshops

Such initiatives are expected to help students develop personal goals and build a balanced learning experience. The new guidelines form part of a broader effort to strengthen student support systems and create inclusive, healthy and stress-free learning environments in higher education institutions across India.
