TOEFL Exam 2026: Check Latest Update, New Scoring System and Test Pattern Explained

The TOEFL Exam has been changed significantly in 2026, as the Education testing service(EST) introduced a new update which is Regarded as TOEFL iBT Format, which is a new scoring system and an adaptive testing. The TOEFL exam revised test was earlier launched on January 21, 2026 to better reflect on the students so they can use modern English based on the academic environment structure.

Candidates should know that Before planning test booking, they must know about the new exam format, the way score is reported and registration guidelines for those who are planning to study abroad. ETS reports scores on a scale of 1 to 6 while offering equivalent scores on the scale of 0 to 120.

TOEFL Exam 2026 Latest Update

ETS has introduced several changes to the TOEFL iBT examination to make the test more adaptive and relevant to contemporary academic communication. The updated test includes changes to the Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking sections, along with a revised scoring system.

The main TOEFL exam updates candidates should know about are listed below.

Candidates should refer to the official ETS website for the latest test-day instructions, available appointments and registration details. https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about/content-structure.html

TOEFL Exam New Scoring System 2026

One of the biggest changes to the TOEFL exam is the introduction of a 1–6 scoring scale. Since January 21, 2026, candidates have received individual scores for all four sections and an overall score reported in half-point increments.

The new scale is designed to align more closely with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), helping universities and students interpret English proficiency more consistently.

During the two-year transition period following the January 2026 launch, ETS also provides a comparable overall score on the traditional 0–120 scale. This allows candidates to apply to institutions that have not yet updated their published TOEFL score requirements.

Universities may set different minimum score requirements. Candidates should therefore check the latest English-language proficiency criteria of each institution before submitting their applications. https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/scores/understand-scores.html

TOEFL Exam Pattern 2026 and Section-Wise Details

The updated TOEFL iBT continues to assess four core English-language skills. However, the test now includes revised task types, more contemporary academic content and adaptive testing in Reading and Listening.

Candidates should familiarise themselves with the revised format before beginning their preparation.

The base timings total approximately 90 minutes, but candidates should allow around two hours for the complete test, including instructions and any variation resulting from adaptive testing. The actual number of questions and test time may vary. https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about/content-structure.html

TOEFL Exam Adaptive Testing and New Question Types

The revised TOEFL exam uses adaptive technology in the Reading and Listening sections. This means the test adjusts according to the candidate's performance as the examination progresses.

ETS has also introduced more contemporary language tasks intended to reflect real academic and everyday communication. These include writing emails, completing sentence-building tasks and responding to interview-style speaking prompts.

Candidates preparing for the TOEFL exam should practise a variety of question formats instead of relying exclusively on preparation material designed for the older test version. Official sample questions and preparation resources can help students become familiar with the updated format.

TOEFL Exam Results 2026 and Score Reporting

ETS states that official TOEFL iBT scores are generally available in the candidate's ETS account three days after the test date. Candidates receive an email notification when their results become available.

TOEFL scores remain valid for two years from the test date. Candidates can download their score reports through their ETS accounts and send official scores to institutions according to the applicable reporting rules.

Students should also remember that TOEFL does not set a universal passing score. Each university or institution determines the minimum English proficiency score required for admission. Candidates should verify whether their target institution accepts the new 1–6 score format or refers to the comparable 0–120 score. https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/scores/understand-scores.html
