TN RTE Admissions 2026-27: Essential Dates and Application Guide

As the academic year 2026-27 approaches, parents in Tamil Nadu seeking admissions for their children in Class LKG and I under the Right to Education (RTE) Act can start their preparations. The application process is set to begin soon, and understanding the key dates and eligibility requirements is crucial for a successful application.

The application window for the TN RTE admissions will open on April 20, 2026, and will close on May 18, 2026. This gives parents a full month to submit their applications either online through the official TN RTE portal or directly at their preferred private schools.

During this period, it is essential for parents to ensure that all necessary documentation is ready, as verification of documents will be strictly enforced this year. The timeline for document verification will run from April 22 to May 19, 2026, allowing parents to address any issues that may arise.

The draw of lots for admissions will take place on May 22, 2026, and the final list of admitted students will be published on May 29, 2026. It is important to note that children from special categories will be given preference during the draw.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

To apply for LKG, children must have been born between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023. For Class I, the birth date requirement is between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2020. Additionally, applicants from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) must demonstrate that their family income does not exceed Rs 2 lakh per annum.

Parents should be aware that the application process requires various documents to verify eligibility. These include:

  • Age proof: Birth certificate from authorized entities.
  • Address proof: Documents such as Aadhaar, passport, or utility bills.
  • Caste/category proof: Certification from relevant authorities for reserved categories.
  • Income proof: For EWS applicants, a document confirming annual income.

Parents must ensure that all required documents are submitted clearly and legibly within the application period. The following documents are necessary for all applicants:

Address ProofAadhaar card, passport, utility bills, or voter ID in the parent's name.

Parents are advised to prepare these documents ahead of time to avoid any last-minute issues. If any documents are missing, parents will receive an SMS notification and must upload the required documents before 5 PM on May 19, 2026.

Seat Availability and School Responsibilities

Private matriculation schools are required to assess the total number of seats available under the RTE for LKG and Class I. This data must be submitted to district chief education officers by April 7, 2026. The seat distribution will be displayed on school notice boards and made available on the TN RTE portal by April 15, 2026.

This year marks a return to the traditional application process, as last year schools were directed to transfer eligible students to the RTE quota without a formal application call. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to be proactive in gathering documents and understanding the application process.
