The recent ruling from the Telangana High Court has introduced a significant pause in the ongoing recruitment process for the RRB Group D positions. Specifically, the court has issued an interim stay on the announcement of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) results for the recruitment cycle under CEN 08/2024, which directly affects the 2026 recruitment cycle. This decision was made in response to Writ Petition No. 789/2026, which names the Directorate General of Training and the Ministry of Railways as respondents.
On March 26, 2026, the Telangana High Court ordered the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) to refrain from releasing the results of the CBT until the next hearing, which is scheduled for April 15, 2026. This ruling has generated considerable uncertainty among candidates who are eagerly awaiting their results from examinations conducted between November 2025 and February 2026.
Current Status of the RRB Group D Recruitment
The RRB Group D recruitment is one of the largest recruitment drives in India, with a total of 32,438 vacancies available for various Level-1 posts, including roles such as Track Maintainer, Helper, and Assistant Pointsman. The CBT for these positions was conducted from November 27, 2025, to February 10, 2026, and the answer keys were released on February 17, 2026.
Initially, results were anticipated to be published in April 2026 in a PDF format, with candidates able to access their scorecards through a dedicated login. The selection process for these positions comprises several stages: CBT, Physical Efficiency Test (PET), document verification, and medical examination. However, the PET cannot proceed until the court's stay is lifted, leaving candidates in a state of limbo.
Reasons Behind the Court's Intervention
The court's decision to stay the results stems from concerns raised by Apprentice (CCA) candidates regarding modifications made by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in a 2022 order. Previously, CCA candidates were exempt from the PET, with their theoretical and practical marks combined for evaluation. However, the new regulations have shifted the focus towards practical marks, while holders of NCVT/ITI certificates are now exempt from apprenticeship exams.
The petitioners argue that the current method of practical evaluation lacks transparency and are advocating for a return to the previous policy framework. The court has instructed the relevant authorities to clarify the role of the Directorate General of Training in shaping recruitment-related policies, which has become a central issue in this dispute.
Link to Previous Disputes and Recruitment Challenges
This recruitment process has faced its share of challenges, including a prior delay related to the qualification criteria concerning 10th grade versus ITI qualifications, which had already postponed the recruitment timeline by nearly a year. The merit formula used in the recruitment process combines CBT scores with apprentice performance in a 2:1 ratio, and apprentices are also entitled to a 20 percent horizontal reservation.
The current petition raises questions about whether the Directorate General of Training has the authority to make such policy decisions, adding another layer of complexity to an already intricate situation.
What Lies Ahead for Candidates
Looking ahead, if the court hearing on April 15 leads to a resolution, candidates can expect the results to be released between April 20 and April 25. However, any delays in the proceedings could push the announcement into May. In the meantime, candidates are advised to continue their preparations for the PET, which includes physical tasks such as running and weight-lifting, and to stay updated by monitoring official RRB websites for verified announcements.
