Tamil Nadu MBBS Counselling 2025 Delayed, Classes Likely After Sept 20

Tamil Nadu MBBS Counselling admission 2025 has faced a delay. With more than 1,750 additional seats pending approval, the counselling schedule has been put on hold. Due to this, the first year MBBS classes are now expected to start only after September 20, 2025

The delay starts from the National Medical Commission (NMC), which is yet to clear applications from several colleges. At least a dozen self-financing institutions have sought to add 50 to 150 MBBS seats each, while four deemed universities have applied for 100 seats each. Until approvals are granted, the state cannot move forward with counselling.

MBBS Admissions Pushed Beyond September 20

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) had earlier indicated that Round 2 of all-India counselling could start on August 29, 2025. However, with the NMC still reviewing proposals, no fresh dates have been released. Tamil Nadu’s state-level counselling, which usually follows MCC’s rounds. Officials confirmed that the academic calendar will be compressed, and classes may now commence only after September 20, 2025

Tamil Nadu plays an important role in India’s medical education landscape. The state has nearly 12,000 MBBS seats spread across 77 institutions. Nationally, there are 1.15 lakh MBBS seats available across 766 medical colleges.

Seat Changes in Tamil Nadu Colleges

In July, PSP Medical College in Kanchipuram lost 50 MBBS seats after being found non-compliant with NMC norms. Its intake dropped from 150 to 100. Meanwhile, proposals for more than a dozen other colleges and deemed universities remain under review.

If cleared, Tamil Nadu could see a major boost in medical capacity. However, until then, students face uncertainty, and the admission calendar remains on hold.

Impact on Tamil Nadu MBBS Students and Academic Calendar

Faculty members fear that the delay will put additional pressure on students. With the session starting late, syllabus completion will become tighter. Vacations are also likely to be cut short to balance the schedule. Experts have cautioned that compressed timelines could affect final-year exams and even postgraduate eligibility.

Counselling authorities in Tamil Nadu have stated that they are awaiting a signal from the NMC before releasing a revised schedule. Aspirants have been advised to regularly check updates on the MCC website and the Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee portal.
