On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to consider a petition challenging the National Board of Examination’s decision to conduct the NEET PG 2025 exam in two separate shifts.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET PG) is scheduled for 15th June, 2025, and will be held in two shifts through a computer-based test format. The results are expected to be announced by 15th July, 2025.
A bench led by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih acknowledged the lawyer’s request and stated that the matter will be scheduled for a hearing soon.
On 23rd May, 2025, the Supreme Court bench had indicated that a hearing on the plea would take place the following week, but it was not scheduled. The lawyer raised the issue again on Monday, emphasizing the urgency of the matter. “The bench had assured it would be listed this week. It’s extremely urgent, as admit cards are set to be released on 2nd June,” the lawyer stated.
In response, Chief Justice B. R. Gavai said the case would be listed within a day or two. Earlier, on 5th May, 2025 the bench had requested responses from the National Board of Examinations (NBE), the National Medical Commission, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regarding the plea.
In a related development, the Supreme Court recently issued a ruling aimed at preventing seat-blocking in NEET PG counselling. The verdict included directives for the release of raw scores, answer keys, and the normalization formula used in the exam.
The current petition challenges the decision to hold the NEET PG 2025 exam in two shifts, arguing that differences in difficulty levels across shifts could lead to unfair outcomes. It urges the court to direct the NBE to conduct the exam in a single session to ensure a fair, reasonable, and equal assessment environment for all candidates.
