The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that the NEET-PG 2025 exam, originally scheduled for 15th June, 2025 be conducted in one single shift rather than two.
The directive came from a bench led by Justice Vikram Nath, which instructed the concerned authorities to make all necessary arrangements to conduct the exam in a single session, emphasizing the need for complete transparency throughout the process.
Justices Sanjay Kumar and N. V. Anjaria, who were also part of the bench, noted that conducting the exam in two separate shifts may lead to arbitrariness, which the court aims to avoid.
The Supreme Court observed that no two question papers can ever be exactly equal in terms of difficulty or simplicity, highlighting the inherent variability between exam sets.
This statement was made while the bench was hearing a petition that challenged the notification for conducting the NEET-PG 2025 exam in two shifts.
In recent developments, the apex court has also issued several important directives aimed at curbing seat-blocking practices in NEET-PG counselling, including orders for the disclosure of raw scores, answer keys, and the normalisation process used in the exam.
The petition argued that conducting the NEET-PG in multiple shifts could create inequality due to the different levels of difficulty, potentially disadvantaging some candidates. It requested that the National Board of Examinations (NBE) hold the exam in a single shift to ensure a process that is fair, transparent, and equitable for all aspirants.
