Savitribai Phule Pune University has postponed engineering examinations scheduled for May 2026 after protests by engineering students and student organisations over the university’s carry-on policy and exam eligibility concerns.
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has postponed engineering examinations scheduled for May 2026 following protests by engineering students and student organisations demanding relief regarding the controversial carry-on policy and examination eligibility rules.
The decision was taken after several students raised concerns over being denied permission to appear for examinations because of pending backlog subjects and progression-related criteria. Student groups, including members of the National Students’ Union of India and Youth Congress, staged protests seeking immediate intervention from the university administration.
Why SPPU Engineering Exams 2026 Were Postponed?
The protests were linked to the university’s “carry-on” policy, which affects students with backlogs seeking promotion to higher academic years. Many engineering students argued that they were at risk of losing an academic year despite clearing several required credits. Students also demanded:
- Re-examinations for affected candidates
- Relaxation in backlog rules
- Permission to appear for semester examinations
- Transparency regarding grace marks and eligibility criteria
The university administration postponed the examinations after mounting pressure and demonstrations on the campus.
Bombay High Court Relief for Engineering Students
The developments came shortly after the Bombay High Court granted interim relief to hundreds of engineering students affected by the policy dispute.
According to reports, nearly 751 to 771 engineering students received temporary permission to appear for upcoming examinations after the court intervened in the matter. The affected students had challenged the university’s decision restricting them from filling examination forms due to carry-on policy rules. The court’s interim order provided major relief to students from third and final-year engineering courses who feared losing an academic year because of backlog-related eligibility restrictions.
Student Organisations Intensify Protest at SPPU
Student organisations intensified demonstrations at the university campus demanding immediate action from authorities. Protesters claimed that many students were unfairly affected despite fulfilling substantial academic credit requirements. Student leaders argued that:
- Previous academic sessions had received temporary carry-forward relaxation
- Students should receive similar concessions this year
- Sudden policy implementation created uncertainty for aspirants
Reports stated that protesters gathered outside university administrative buildings and sought urgent meetings with examination officials regarding the issue.
SPPU Carry-On Policy and Backlog Rules Explained
Under SPPU regulations, engineering students are required to secure a minimum percentage of academic credits to progress to the next year. Students failing to meet the prescribed threshold may be restricted from appearing in higher semester examinations.
University officials defended the policy, stating that academic standards and eligibility rules must be maintained to preserve the quality of technical education. However, student groups maintained that exceptional relief should be provided considering academic disruptions and evolving examination patterns. Earlier, the university had introduced provisional promotion measures for students with “critical backlogs” after similar protests during previous academic sessions.
Revised SPPU Engineering Exam Schedule Expected Soon
The university is expected to release a revised engineering examination schedule shortly through its official portals. Students have been advised to regularly monitor official notifications regarding:
- Fresh exam dates
- Hall ticket updates
- Examination form submission
- Eligibility clarifications
SPPU officials are also expected to hold discussions regarding the implementation of revised provisions or temporary relief measures for affected engineering students. The postponed examinations are likely to be rescheduled after administrative review and further consultation with legal and academic authorities.
