Sindh’s education boards are set to introduce a modern e‑marking system for matriculation and intermediate (inter) exams from 2026, a major digital reform aimed at boosting transparency and efficiency. The update was confirmed by the Sindh government and involves software for scanning, QR‑codes on answer sheets, and automated processing. The launch event is scheduled on December 4, 2025, in Karachi. Board chairpersons from 29 education boards are expected to attend, along with officials from the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC).
What the New System Will Do?
A high-level committee named Digitization and Technology Implementation in Education Boards has been formed to steer the shift toward digital examinations. The software will cover e‑marking, scanning of answer sheets, and QR‑code technology, enabling different evaluators to assess different parts of the same paper. Each page of the exam booklets for certain intermediate exams (e.g., Pre‑Engineering and Pre‑Medical) will carry a QR code, which helps in tracking and scanning. According to Faqir Muhammad Lakho, chairman of the Karachi Intermediate Board, no single marker will grade more than one question from the same paper — multiple teachers will evaluate different questions for each student’s paper.
Why Does This Reform Matters?
Education and board officials argue that the e‑marking system will greatly improve accuracy and cut down on human error during the grading process. By digitizing marking, the boards plan to deliver results faster and make the entire process more transparent, helping reduce corruption and exam malpractice. In addition, the system supports environmental goals since fewer paper‑handling steps will be needed. The move is also expected to reduce costs over the long term. Sindh’s Education Minister, Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, emphasised that shifting to e‑marking is not just a technological upgrade — it is a step toward building trust in exam outcomes. He also mentioned plans to gradually power board offices with solar energy, particularly for Karachi and Larkana, to support the digital transition.
Implementation Timeline & Training
Board officials will receive training on the new e‑marking software in Islamabad ahead of the roll-out. IBCC will provide technical support and will coordinate the training effort. Following training, the system will be tested in a pilot phase for certain exams before full deployment. By December 2025, Sindh aims to complete the integration of this system so that the 2026 annual matric and inter exams run entirely on this digital evaluation model.
