The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 49 additional super‑speciality seats in DM and MCh courses to be included in the NEET SS 2026 counselling process for the 2025‑26 academic year. These newly sanctioned seats will be incorporated into the ongoing counselling managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), giving more aspirants opportunities for admission.

NMC Approves 49 Additional DM, MCh Seats for NEET SS Counselling 2026

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 49 additional seats in super‑speciality courses — Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgie (MCh) — to be added to the NEET Super Speciality (SS) counselling 2026 seat matrix for the academic year 2025‑26. This expansion follows recommendations from the NMC’s first appeal committee after reviewing appeals submitted by medical institutions.

Expanded Super‑Speciality Seat Matrix for NEET SS 2026

The decision to sanction extra seats aims to broaden access to postgraduate super‑speciality medical education amid high demand for DM and MCh programmes across India. In total, 49 new seats have been approved, covering multiple medical colleges and specialisations, and the official Letters of Permission (LOPs) for these seats are expected to be released soon. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which conducts the online counselling for NEET SS, will now integrate these additional seats into the ongoing Round 2 counselling process. Candidates participating in counselling are advised to monitor official portals closely for updates related to seat availability and choice filling.

Impact on NEET SS Seat Availability

These additional seats are a significant development for aspiring super‑speciality doctors, as they slightly increase the total number of available positions in disciplines such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, surgical specialities and more. Expansion of seats can improve chances for eligible candidates to secure admission through merit‑based counselling. Although the total number of seats was already competitive, the inclusion of 49 extra positions may ease some pressure for applicants who narrowly missed selection in earlier years. The precise list of institutions and the distribution of seats across specialities have been published alongside the official notice.

NEET SS Counselling and Admission Timeline

The MCC oversees the entire counselling schedule for NEET SS, which includes registration, choice filling, seat allotment, reporting, and admission formalities. Following the seat increase, aspirants involved in Round 2 should ensure that their registrations and preferences are updated in line with the revised seat matrix. While counselling timelines and key dates are managed centrally by the MCC, candidates are encouraged to check mcc.nic.in regularly for official notifications and deadlines related to seat allotment results and reporting procedures.

Why NEET SS Matters for Medical Postgraduate Aspirants?

NEET SS is a national‑level exam determining admission into super‑speciality medical programmes. Approval of extra seats by the NMC not only reflects efforts to accommodate a growing number of qualified candidates but also addresses institutional appeals that highlighted unmet seat requirements. This development is expected to be welcomed by many aspiring super‑speciality doctors as it marginally enhances opportunities to pursue advanced medical training in high‑demand courses across India
