Mindset Shift for NEET Aspirants: Insights from Rohit Gupta

As the NEET exam date approaches, students across India are immersed in their studies, preparing for one of the most challenging tests in the country. With the exam scheduled for May 3, 2026, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation and anxiety. Students are often found hunched over their desks, surrounded by revision sheets and textbooks, desperately trying to retain every detail. This intense period is less about acquiring new knowledge and more about consolidating what they have already learned.

For many NEET aspirants, the pressure can be overwhelming. The fear of failure looms large, and the desire to achieve high scores can lead to stress-induced mental blocks. Rohit Gupta, the Chief Academic Officer at PhysicsWallah, emphasizes that this moment is critical for students. He advises against starting new topics at this late stage, suggesting instead that students focus on revising familiar material.

“This is the last moment for the students for their preparation. They should not start anything new. Instead, they should concentrate on what they have already learned,” Gupta states. He stresses that the NCERT textbooks should be their primary resource, especially for biology, where every line is crucial for understanding key concepts.

Managing Stress and Expectations

One of the most significant challenges faced by aspirants is the mental pressure that comes with high expectations. Gupta notes that students often set ambitious targets, such as scoring 700 out of 720, which can backfire during the exam. “When they go into the examination with those high expectations and if two questions in a row they are not able to solve, then they get blank,” he explains. This mental block can be particularly detrimental for well-prepared students who may struggle under the weight of their own aspirations.

To combat this, Gupta recommends that students adopt a more relaxed approach. “They should not go with lots of targets in their mind. They should simply attempt the paper,” he advises. This shift in mindset can help students focus on their knowledge rather than their scores, allowing them to perform better under pressure.

The Importance of Practice

Preparation for NEET is not solely about reviewing material; it also involves simulating the exam environment. Gupta encourages students to take at least one mock test daily to build familiarity with the exam format. “Mock tests are not just practice; they are emotional rehearsals,” he states. This practice can help students manage their anxiety and improve their time management skills during the actual exam.

Gupta also advises students on strategic approaches during the exam. He suggests starting with biology, as it can boost confidence early on. “In the first 20–30 minutes, you will be able to solve the biology questions and gain a lot of confidence,” he explains. He warns against spending too much time on challenging questions, which can lead to a dangerous race against the clock. “If they find something challenging, they should mark it and then move ahead,” he advises, highlighting the importance of time management.

Pre-Exam Rituals and Final Preparations

The day before the exam is often filled with anxiety, but Gupta offers a refreshing perspective. He advises students to refrain from studying and instead focus on rest and relaxation. “Before the examination, one day before, you should not study anything. You should take a good sleep, eat healthy, and do a little bit of meditation,” he recommends. This approach underscores the importance of mental well-being in achieving academic success.

On the academic front, Gupta provides specific guidance for each subject. For biology, he emphasizes the need to read the NCERT line by line and practice assertion-reason questions, as these often trip up students. In physics, he warns against neglecting seemingly easy chapters like units and measurement, which frequently appear in exams. “Play on your strength, try to have at least 80–85% of the chapters in your confidence zone,” he advises, suggesting that students focus on optimizing their strengths rather than striving for perfection.

Final Thoughts on NEET Preparation

Ultimately, the journey to NEET is as much about mental fortitude as it is about academic knowledge. Rohit Gupta’s insights provide a roadmap for students navigating this challenging phase. By focusing on revision, managing expectations, practicing effectively, and prioritizing mental health, aspirants can enhance their chances of success. The exam is not just a test of knowledge; it is a test of resilience and strategy.
