Karnataka HC Backs CBSE in Cancelling Exam for Mobile Phone

The Karnataka High Court has upheld CBSE’s decision to cancel a student’s board exam after a mobile phone was carried into the examination hall. The court stated that carrying electronic devices violates CBSE exam guidelines, even if the device is not used during the exam.
The Karnataka High Court has supported the Central Board of Secondary Education’s decision to cancel a student’s board examination after the candidate carried a mobile phone inside the examination hall. The incident has once again highlighted the strict enforcement of CBSE board exam guidelines 2026.
According to reports, the student approached the court seeking relief after the examination was cancelled on the grounds of using unfair means during the exam.
Karnataka High Court Verdict on CBSE Exam Rule Violation
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C M Poonacha examined the case and upheld the decision taken by the CBSE board.
The student had argued that the mobile phone was not used during the examination, and therefore the cancellation of the exam was an excessive punishment. However, the court observed that the candidate had violated the exam rules by bringing an electronic device into the examination hall.
The bench noted that the board had already issued clear instructions prohibiting electronic devices during examinations, and candidates are required to strictly follow these guidelines.
Court Observations on Examination Integrity
While delivering the verdict, the court emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness and integrity in the examination system. The bench stated that even if the device is not used during the exam, simply carrying it into the examination hall constitutes a violation of the official rules. Such regulations are essential to ensure that the examination process remains transparent and free from unfair practices.
CBSE Exam Guidelines on Electronic Devices
Under the CBSE examination guidelines, students are strictly prohibited from bringing any electronic devices into the examination hall. The list of prohibited items includes:
- Mobile phones
- Smart watches
- Bluetooth devices
- Calculators and electronic gadgets
According to the board’s regulations, carrying electronic devices during an examination is treated as a Category-3 offence.
Consequences of Violating CBSE Exam Rules
The CBSE board has categorized exam misconduct into different levels of offences. Carrying prohibited electronic devices falls under serious violations and may lead to strict disciplinary action. Possible actions that may be taken include:
- Cancellation of the examination paper
- Disqualification from the examination process
- Other disciplinary measures as per board rules
The court’s decision reinforces the importance of adhering to CBSE exam day guidelines and serves as a reminder for students to carefully follow all instructions issued by the board during the examination period.
