The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are considering a proposal to stop sharing JEE Advanced ranks with recruiters during campus placements. The move aims to reduce recruitment bias and provide equal opportunities to students from diverse academic and social backgrounds. The proposal was recently discussed by the All IITs Placement Committee and is expected to be implemented from the 2026-27 placement season after receiving the necessary approvals.

IITs May Stop Sharing JEE Advanced Ranks With the Recruiters

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are planning a significant change in their placement process by restricting the sharing of JEE Advanced ranks with recruiters. The proposal, discussed by the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC), seeks to ensure a fair and inclusive recruitment environment for all students participating in campus placements. If approved, the policy could come into effect from the 2026-27 placement season across IIT campuses.

IIT Placement Committee Discusses New Recruitment Policy

The proposal was recently deliberated during a meeting of the All IITs Placement Committee. According to officials associated with the committee, the objective is to prevent companies from using JEE Advanced ranks as a screening parameter during recruitment. The issue has gained attention following concerns raised by students and placement representatives regarding the use of entrance examination ranks several years after admission to IITs. The proposal is currently awaiting final approval before implementation.

Why Are IITs Considering the Change in Placement Process?

The proposed policy is primarily aimed at reducing potential bias in hiring decisions. Students from various IITs have reportedly expressed concerns that certain recruiters use JEE Advanced ranks as a filtering criterion while shortlisting candidates for interviews. According to discussions within placement committees, some companies reportedly prefer candidates with very high JEE Advanced ranks, which may disadvantage students who have demonstrated strong academic and professional growth during their years at IITs. The proposed change seeks to shift greater emphasis toward skills, academic performance, projects and interview performance rather than entrance examination ranks achieved years earlier.

The proposed reform is expected to introduce a more uniform placement process across IIT campuses. The final decision is expected after discussions among participating IITs and placement authorities.

Concerns Over JEE Advanced Rank-Based Screening

Several student representatives have highlighted that some recruiters continue to seek information related to JEE Advanced ranks despite students already completing multiple years of higher education at IITs. In certain cases, companies reportedly restrict eligibility to candidates within specific rank ranges, such as top 100 or top 1,000 rank holders. Students have argued that such practices may not accurately reflect a candidate's current abilities, technical expertise, research accomplishments or professional readiness.

How the Proposed Policy Could Affect IIT Placements?

The proposed restriction is expected to encourage recruiters to focus more on factors that reflect a student's performance during their academic journey. Placement officials believe that such an approach could create a more balanced and merit-based recruitment ecosystem for students across disciplines and categories. These may include:

  • Academic performance at IITs
  • Research projects and publications
  • Internship experience
  • Technical and professional skills
  • Coding and problem-solving abilities
  • Performance in recruitment assessments
  • Interview performance

Companies That Commonly Consider JEE Advanced Ranks

While many recruiters primarily focus on interviews, assessments and academic records, some specialised sectors have traditionally considered entrance examination performance during hiring. Industry experts note that recruitment practices vary significantly across organisations, and many companies already do not consider JEE Advanced ranks during hiring. The companies most often associated with rank-based screening include:

What the Proposal Means for Future IIT Students?

If implemented, the policy could alter how students prepare for placements and present their achievements to recruiters. Greater emphasis may be placed on building technical expertise, research profiles, internships and practical experience throughout the academic programme. The proposal also aligns with broader discussions on making placement processes more inclusive and reflective of a student's overall growth during their time at IITs. While the final approval is still pending, the move has generated significant interest among students, placement coordinators and recruiters alike. The decision could become one of the most notable placement-related reforms introduced across IIT campuses in recent years.
