IITs JEE Admission 2025 have allocated more seats than their total sanctioned capacity for the 2025 admissions. The participation of women in IITs has increased, reaching a percentage of 20.15% of the total seat intake. The government is also set to expand seat availability with plans to add 6,500 more seats in new IITs in the coming years.
IIT Seat Allocation Exceeds Sanctioned Capacity
In IIT JEE 2025, admissions have seen most of the IITs allot more seats than their approved intake. This year, 18,188 seats were allocated across various IITs, surpassing the sanctioned 18,160 seats. The move is part of the Joint Seat Allocation Authority’s (JoSAA) effort to maximise seat utilisation.
Seat Intake at IITs Continues to Rise
Over the past few years, the number of seats in IITs has continuously increased. From 17,385 seats in 2023 to 18,160 seats in 2025, the seat intake continues to grow. This expansion is basically aimed at the government’s efforts to make IITs more accessible to a larger pool of students.
Government's Plan for Future Seat Expansion
In a push to enhance access to top-tier technical education, the Union Budget 2025 has announced the creation of 6,500 additional seats over the five newer IITs: Palakkad, Dharwad, Jammu, Bhilai, and Tirupati. These seats will be introduced over the next five years, primarily aimed at B.Tech level admissions.
Improving Women’s Representation in IITs
The participation of female students in IITs has made an impactful change. In 2025, 3,664 women secured IIT seats, accounting for 20.15% of the total. Some IITs, such as IIT Tirupati, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee, reported higher female participation, with IIT Tirupati leading the charge at 21.57%. This increase also includes 3,632 supernumerary female-only seats and special categories like defence services, OCI/PIO, and foreign national allotments.
