The Summer Research Internship Scheme has been structured into multiple categories to accommodate students at different academic levels. The programme is divided into the following categories.
- Category I: For BTech undergraduate students
- Category II: For postgraduate students
- Category III: Long Term Research Internship for six to twelve months

Under Categories I and II, the institute will provide three funded internship positions per department. These positions are aimed at encouraging meritorious students to participate in research activities at IIT ISM Dhanbad.
Students selected under project-funded internships will work under faculty members associated with funded research projects, while self-funded candidates may participate without institutional financial support.
