ICAI plans to introduce artificial intelligence, data analytics, ESG, and forensic auditing into the CA curriculum as part of a major syllabus review. The newly formed CRET committee will examine curriculum reforms aimed at modernising CA education and preparing students for technology-driven financial and accounting roles.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and other emerging subjects into the Chartered Accountancy (CA) curriculum as part of a major syllabus modernization initiative.
The move comes amid growing use of digital tools, automation, and technology-driven financial systems across industries. ICAI aims to equip future chartered accountants with skills required in modern auditing, taxation, finance, and compliance practices.
ICAI to Modernise CA Education Structure
According to ICAI officials, subjects such as:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Data Analytics
- ESG and Sustainability Reporting
- Forensic Auditing
- Technology-driven Financial Systems
will gradually be integrated into the revised CA education framework. At present, these subjects are not formally included in the CA syllabus.
ICAI President Highlights Need for AI Skills
ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D stated that technology has become an essential part of the accounting profession and chartered accountants must adapt to emerging digital trends. He noted that AI is no longer limited to engineering or technical industries. Chartered accountants working both in corporate employment and independent practice will increasingly require knowledge of AI-based systems and data analytics tools.According to him, future accounting professionals will need to handle:
- AI-assisted auditing systems
- Data-driven financial analysis
- Automated compliance processes
- ESG reporting frameworks
- Digital risk management tools
ICAI Forms CRET Committee for Curriculum Review
To implement the proposed changes, ICAI has constituted the Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET).The committee will review:
- Existing CA syllabus
- Practical training structure
- Examination patterns
- Communication and soft skills training
- Technology integration in CA education
The CRET committee is expected to recommend reforms aligned with changing industry expectations and global professional standards.
Why ICAI is Revising the CA Syllabus?
The accounting and finance sector is witnessing rapid transformation due to:
- AI-driven automation
- Digital auditing systems
- ESG compliance requirements
- Data-based risk analysis
- Increased focus on forensic accounting
Experts believe future chartered accountants will need both financial expertise and technological proficiency to remain competitive. The revised curriculum is expected to help CA students gain practical exposure to evolving business practices and emerging technologies.
ICAI Earlier Introduced New Education Scheme in 2023
ICAI had already implemented a New Scheme of Education and Training in 2023 aimed at improving flexibility and practical exposure for students. The newly formed CRET committee will now examine additional reforms needed to further modernize the CA programme. According to officials, the committee is likely to complete its review process by December 2026. The proposed recommendations will later be released publicly for stakeholder feedback and discussion.
Benefits of AI & Data Analytics in CA Education
Experts say the inclusion of AI and analytics in the CA curriculum could help students:
- Improve employability
- Gain industry-relevant skills
- Understand digital auditing tools
- Work with automated financial systems
- Adapt to evolving accounting standards
The changes are expected to strengthen the professional readiness of future chartered accountants in India’s rapidly changing financial ecosystem.
