Students who did not score among the top percentile in their Class 12 board exams can still secure admission to prestigious programmes under the Vocational Studies stream at Delhi University (DU). These courses not only offer a DU degree but also open up a range of career opportunities across multiple sectors. The College of Vocational Studies (CVS) at DU runs a three-year Vocational Studies Programme offering 12 specialised courses in professional domains. “Students with 70–80% marks in their Class XII exams can easily find a place in vocational courses,” said Dr. S.K. Bajpai, a faculty member of the Tourism Department at CVS.
Popular Courses and Cut-offs
Among the available options, Tourism and Human Resource Management (HRM) remain the most sought-after.
- Tourism cut-off: 72.5%
- HRM cut-off: 80%
Faculty members noted that in recent years, even students with higher percentages have started applying to vocational courses due to their strong employability value. “The possibility of getting a job right after graduation is what attracts many students,” added Dr. Bajpai.
Students Opting for Skill-Oriented Programs
Priyanka Gandhi, a Science student who scored 89.5% in her board exams, has applied for the Tourism course this year. “The tourism industry in India is growing rapidly. This programme will give me opportunities to work in aviation, hotels, travel agencies, and as a tour escort,” she said.
Career Scope and Pay Packages
Graduates from vocational courses are increasingly being recruited by insurance firms, consultancy companies, outsourcing agencies, and investment services. “The starting pay package is around ₹2.3 lakh per annum, which is quite decent for freshers,” said Inderjeet Dagar, Principal of CVS. With a balance of academic and practical training, DU’s vocational courses continue to be an excellent alternative for students looking for career-oriented undergraduate education.
