Delhi University will use GATE scores for admission to its MTech programme for the first time from the 2026 academic session. The university will offer admission to the MTech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering through a separate portal.
DU MTech Admissions 2026 to Accept GATE Scores for First Time as the University of Delhi has announced a major change in its postgraduate engineering admission process. From the 2026 academic session onward, Delhi University will consider Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores for admission to its MTech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering.
This marks the first time that Delhi University will use GATE scores for admission to any postgraduate programme. The decision comes after the programme received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), allowing the university to formally adopt the national-level engineering entrance examination for admissions. xUniversity officials stated that the move is aimed at strengthening technical education standards and aligning the programme with national engineering admission practices followed by premier technical institutions across the country.
DU Introduces GATE-Based Admission for MTech Programme
Delhi University confirmed that admissions to the MTech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering will now be conducted using GATE scores. The university clarified that this is the first postgraduate programme in DU where admission preference will be based on performance in the GATE examination.
According to the university, the course had existed earlier as part of its academic offerings, but admission through GATE is being introduced only after receiving AICTE approval for the programme structure and admission framework. The introduction of GATE-based admission is expected to increase competition among applicants and attract engineering graduates from different parts of the country. Education experts believe that acceptance of GATE scores could also improve the academic and research profile of the programme.
Separate Admission Portal for DU MTech Admissions 2026
Delhi University has informed candidates that admissions for the MTech programme will not be conducted through the Common Seat Allocation System for Postgraduate Admissions (CSAS PG). Instead, applicants will have to apply through a separate dedicated admission portal specifically developed for the engineering programme. The university stated that detailed guidelines regarding registration, counselling, eligibility verification, and seat allotment will be announced separately on the official admission portal. Candidates are therefore advised to regularly monitor official DU admission notifications for updates regarding:
- MTech application dates
- Registration process
- Admission portal activation
- Merit list schedule
- Counselling rounds
- Document verification guidelines
The university is expected to release additional admission instructions in the coming weeks.
Eligibility Criteria for DU MTech Admission 2026
Delhi University has also released the eligibility criteria for admission to the MTech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering. According to the official notification, candidates must possess a relevant academic background from a recognized university or institution. Eligible qualifications include:
- BTech degree
- BE degree
- BSc Engineering degree
- MSc degree in relevant discipline
- Equivalent qualification recognized by the university
Students from the following academic branches are eligible to apply for admission:
- Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC)

The university further clarified that applicants must satisfy all programme-specific eligibility requirements mentioned in the official admission guidelines.
DU MTech Seat Intake and Reservation Policy
Delhi University has announced that the MTech programme will have a total intake of 30 seats for the 2026 academic session. The university has also released category-wise seat distribution under the reservation policy.
DU MTech 2026 Seat Distribution
The reservation policy will be implemented according to central government and university admission regulations applicable to postgraduate programmes. Candidates belonging to reserved categories may be required to submit valid supporting documents during counselling and admission verification.
Preference for Candidates With Valid GATE Scores
Delhi University clarified that candidates who have qualified the Common University Entrance Test for Postgraduate Admissions (CUET PG) may also apply for the programme. However, preference during admission will be given to applicants possessing valid GATE scores. University officials stated that GATE-qualified candidates will receive priority in the merit preparation process. The move is expected to enhance academic competitiveness and encourage admissions based on national-level engineering aptitude evaluation.
Haneet Gandhi, Dean of Admissions at Delhi University, reportedly explained that while the programme existed earlier, the university has started accepting GATE scores only from the 2026 session following AICTE approval. The inclusion of GATE-based admissions may also improve opportunities for students interested in research, higher technical studies, and specialised engineering careers.
Importance of GATE for Engineering Admissions
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of India’s most prominent national-level examinations for postgraduate engineering admissions and recruitment opportunities in public sector undertakings. The examination evaluates candidates in areas such as:
- Engineering fundamentals
- Subject-specific technical knowledge
- Analytical ability
- Problem-solving skills
- Mathematical aptitude
Several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and central universities already use GATE scores for admission to MTech and related postgraduate engineering programmes. By adopting GATE-based admission, Delhi University joins a larger group of institutions using standardised national-level evaluation systems for technical postgraduate education.
DU PG Admission 2026 and Expansion of Technical Education
The decision to introduce GATE-based admission reflects Delhi University’s increasing focus on expanding technical and professional education programmes. Education analysts believe the move could strengthen DU’s position in advanced engineering and interdisciplinary research education. The MTech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering is expected to attract students interested in sectors such as:
- Wireless communication
- Radar systems
- Satellite communication
- Embedded systems
- Semiconductor technology
- Telecommunication engineering
- Electronics research and development
Experts also believe that AICTE approval and GATE-based admissions may improve research collaborations, industry participation, and placement opportunities for students enrolled in the programme.
DU MTech Admission Process Expected Soon
Delhi University is expected to release the detailed MTech admission schedule soon. Candidates planning to apply are advised to prepare the necessary documents in advance, including:
- GATE scorecard
- Graduation marksheets
- Category certificates if applicable
- Identity proof
- Academic certificates
- Passport-size photographs
The university will likely conduct the admission process in multiple stages, including registration, merit preparation, counselling, seat allotment, and document verification. Students interested in postgraduate engineering education are now awaiting the official activation of the separate DU MTech admission portal for the 2026 academic session.
