CBSE Makes APAAR ID Mandatory for Class 9 & 11 Registration From 2026‑27

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make the 12‑digit Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID compulsory for student registration in Classes 9 and 11 from the 2026‑27 academic session. This move aims to improve student data management and digital verification of records nationwide.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved a key change in the registration process for students enrolling in Classes 9 and 11 from the 2026‑27 academic session. In a decision taken at the board’s 142nd governing body meeting, the board has made the 12‑digit Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID mandatory for registration.
Mandatory APAAR ID for Class 9 & 11 Registration in 2026‑27
From the upcoming 2026‑27 academic session, all students joining Class 9 and Class 11 in CBSE‑affiliated schools must have a valid APAAR ID at the time of registration. The board highlighted that this unique identifier will help standardise student academic records, support digital verification, and improve long‑term tracking under the “One Nation, One Student ID” initiative. CBSE had already introduced APAAR ID linkage during the 2025‑26 session, but the requirement was relaxed last year after schools raised implementation challenges related to documentation, parental consent, and technical integration. Currently, about 50% of students’ data is linked with APAAR IDs nationwide.
Governing Body Decisions & Related Reforms
Alongside the APAAR ID rule, the board approved other academic reforms during the governing body meeting:
- Redesign of the Class 10 marksheet to incorporate scores from two annual board examinations.
- Establishment of a Global Curriculum Sub‑Committee to align CBSE’s curriculum with international standards.
- Expansion of multilingual options following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
These changes are part of CBSE’s larger effort to modernise academic processes and make student records more accessible and verifiable through digital platforms.
Implementation and School Responsibilities
CBSE has directed affiliated schools to ensure all eligible students obtain or link their APAAR IDs before beginning the registration process on the Pariksha Sangam portal. The board will support schools, especially in regions where the creation of APAAR IDs was previously challenging. The board’s move reflects a broader push towards digitised student data and record management, designed to reduce errors in registration and strengthen academic data integrity.
