CBSE Exam 2026: Class 10, 12 Eligibility Rules, Attendance

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released revised eligibility requirements for the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams 2026. The board has made 75% minimum attendance mandatory, along with internal assessments, a two-year study cycle, and restrictions on schools offering additional subjects without proper facilities.

CBSE 2026 Attendance and Study Cycle Requirements

As per the new rules, students appearing in the Class 10 exam must complete Classes 9 and 10, while those taking the Class 12 exam must complete Classes 11 and 12. This ensures a continuous two-year learning process, preventing board classes from being treated in isolation.

  • Students must maintain at least 75% attendance to be eligible.
  • Both academic years of the cycle (Class 9–10 and Class 11–12) will be considered part of the final evaluation.
  • Schools must track attendance closely and report cases of shortfall as per CBSE norms.

Internal Assessment Rules in CBSE Board Exams 2026

CBSE has clarified that internal assessments are compulsory for all subjects.

  • Failure to appear in internal assessments will place students in the “Essential Repeat” category.
  • Students in this category will not have their board exam results declared.
  • Internal assessments will be treated as an integral part of the two-year evaluation system.

This measure is aimed at encouraging consistent performance throughout the academic cycle.

Rules on Additional Subjects in CBSE 2026

The board has also imposed restrictions on schools offering extra subjects:

  • Schools without CBSE approval, trained teachers, or adequate laboratories will not be permitted to introduce additional subjects.
  • This prevents students from being disadvantaged due to lack of resources.
  • Students who fail an additional subject in the previous year may still reappear as private candidates, without requiring school affiliation.

Impact of CBSE 2026 Guidelines

The new rules are expected to:

  • Reinforce academic discipline in schools.
  • Ensure uniform standards across CBSE-affiliated institutions.
  • Highlight the role of attendance, assessments, and structured learning in shaping student outcomes.

By mandating attendance and regular evaluation, CBSE aims to strengthen the credibility of board examinations and reduce the reliance on last-minute preparation.
