CBSE will implement digital evaluation (on-screen marking) for Class 12 board exams in 2026 to speed up assessment and reduce errors. Class 10 evaluation remains manual this year, with students advised to prepare accordingly.

CBSE Board Exams 2026: On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Evaluation & Key Updates

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant update to the evaluation method for Class 12 board exams in 2026. Alongside this, there are other key changes in the exam process that students, parents and teachers must understand ahead of the examination period.

On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Board Exams

CBSE will introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 answer scripts in the upcoming board exams. This system involves digital assessment of handwritten answer sheets on computer screens instead of the traditional manual checking process. The Board says the move will:

  • Eliminate totalling errors and reduce miscalculations
  • Speed up evaluation and result processing
  • Enhance transparency and consistency in marking
  • Allow teachers to evaluate from their own schools without transporting physical answer books

Teachers will be trained through workshops and dry runs before implementation, and schools have been instructed to ensure technical readiness with adequate computer labs, internet connectivity, and uninterrupted power supply.

Class 10 Board Evaluation to Remain Manual

For Class 10 board exams in 2026, CBSE will continue with traditional manual evaluation of answer sheets. Officials say the phased approach will help manage the transition to digital systems without overloading infrastructure or evaluators.

CBSE Board 2026 Revised Paper Pattern and Preparation Focus

CBSE has already aligned its question paper design with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises competency-based assessment over rote learning. Under this format:

  • 50% competency-focused questions including case-based and application-driven tasks
  • 20% objective multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
  • 30% constructed response questions such as short and long answers

Experts advise students to write clearly, manage time efficiently, and practise with sample papers to adapt to these updated formats ahead of exams.

CBSE Board 2026 Exam Schedule and Logistics

CBSE board exams begin on 17 February 2026, with Class 10 exams running until March 11 and Class 12 exams concluding by April 10. Practical examinations were completed earlier in January–February as per Board guidelines.

CBSE Board 2026 Reaction and Readiness

School principals have responded positively to the digital evaluation system, noting its potential to improve fairness and accuracy. However, some administrators caution that intensive training and proper technical infrastructure will be crucial for smooth implementation.

CBSE Board 2026 Guidance for Students

With changes in evaluation methodology and question formats, students should prioritise:

  • Clear handwriting and structured answers
  • Regular revision of key concepts and sample questions
  • Time management through mock tests
  • Healthy routines to reduce exam stress
