The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently issued a comprehensive advisory to address and clarify the misinformation circulating about QR codes found on Class 12 board exam question papers. This response comes after a wave of viral claims suggested that scanning these codes led to unexpected results associated with internet personality Orry and the famous singer Rick Astley.

 

The controversy began following the Class 12 History exam held on March 30, when students reported that scanning the QR codes on their question papers redirected them to search results linked to Orry. This was not the first instance; a similar situation arose during the Mathematics exam on March 9, where students encountered links to Rick Astley’s iconic song, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” a well-known internet prank known as a “rickroll.”

 

In light of these incidents, CBSE has firmly stated that the QR codes included in the exam papers are not designed to function as hyperlinks. Instead, they serve a critical role in the board's internal systems for authentication, tracking, and maintaining examination integrity. The board clarified that while scanning these codes might reveal encoded text, they do not lead to external websites or multimedia content.

CBSE explained that the confusion stems from the way users interact with the decoded text generated by the QR codes. When students copy this text and search for it online, the results can be influenced by algorithms that may inadvertently display unrelated content, including references to public figures like Orry. This phenomenon has led to a social media frenzy, with numerous videos and screenshots being shared widely.

 

Reacting to the situation, Orry himself expressed surprise at being associated with a board examination context, highlighting the absurdity of the claims. In its advisory, CBSE emphasized that such interpretations are not only misleading but also factually incorrect, warning that they could undermine the credibility of the examination process.
