CBSE has revised the board exam paper pattern for the 2026 academic session. Competency-based questions now carry 50% weightage in Classes 10 and 12. The new format aims to strengthen conceptual understanding and application skills.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has increased the focus on competency-based questions to enhance analytical and application skills. CBSE Question Paper Pattern 2026: New Format and Weightage
The board has clearly defined the revised structure for the upcoming examinations. The new pattern divides the paper into three major components. The details are provided below:
- 50% Competency-Focused Questions:Includes case-study-based questions, source-based questions, and application-driven MCQs. These questions will test conceptual clarity and analytical thinking.
- 20% Select Response Type Questions (MCQs):Objective-type questions designed to assess understanding of key concepts quickly and accurately.
- 30% Constructed Response Questions:Short and long answer type questions that require detailed explanations and structured responses.
This distribution indicates a significant shift toward higher-order thinking skills.

Students preparing for the 2026 board exams must focus on understanding core concepts instead of memorising answers. The increased weightage of case-based questions will require logical reasoning and presence of mind.
