CAT 2025 result has shifted the focus of MBA aspirants from scores to shortlisting chances at IIMs. With the result already declared, candidates are now evaluating whether their percentile is sufficient to receive interview calls from old, new and baby IIMs. While no IIM officially declares a “safe percentile,” admission experts state that shortlisting depends on a composite score that includes CAT performance, academics, work experience and category-wise criteria.
CAT 2025 Safe Percentile Ranges Based on Previous Year Trends
Based on historical shortlisting data and expert inputs, certain percentile ranges are generally considered safer for interview calls during the current admission cycle. The table below outlines the expected CAT 2025 safe percentile ranges for IIM calls.
These ranges are indicative and may vary based on academic background and category.
What Percentile Is Considered Safe for Old IIMs in CAT 2025
For IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta, a percentile of 99.5 or above is generally considered safe only when supported by strong academic consistency. Candidates with gaps or lower scores in Class 10, Class 12 or graduation have missed calls even after scoring above 99 percentile in previous years. This year, 12 candidates scored 100 percentile, indicating heightened competition at the top end. As a result, profile-based differentiation is expected to play a decisive role.
Chances for Candidates in the 98 to 99 Percentile Range
Candidates scoring between 98 and 99 percentile usually stand a strong chance at IIM Lucknow, Kozhikode and Indore. Diversity factors, including academic background and gender, may further improve shortlisting prospects in this range. However, experts caution that percentile alone does not guarantee a call, especially for older IIMs.
Why a High CAT Percentile Does Not Guarantee an IIM Call?
Each IIM follows its own shortlisting formula. Apart from the overall CAT percentile, multiple factors influence selection. Key components considered during shortlisting include:
- Sectional percentile cut-offs
- Academic scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation
- Work experience and its relevance
- Category-based and diversity weightage
As a result, candidates with similar percentiles may receive very different outcomes.
Options for Candidates Scoring Between 90 and 95 Percentile
Candidates in the 90 to 95 percentile range should not consider their chances limited. New and baby IIMs regularly shortlist candidates from this bracket. Several top non-IIM institutes also consider applicants in this range, depending on profile and selection criteria. Institutes such as FMS Delhi, SPJIMR, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI New Delhi, TAPMI and KJ Somaiya remain strong options.
