Nearly 82,000 appointed teachers working under local bodies in Bihar will be allowed to appear for the fifth competency test. This examination will determine their eligibility for state government employee status. The opportunity is being described as decisive, as teachers failing to qualify this time may face uncertainty regarding their service status.
Fifth Bihar Competency Test 2026 Schedule and Conducting Authority
As per official instructions issued by the education department, the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) will conduct the fifth competency test. The examination is scheduled to be held either by the end of January 2026 or in February 2026.This test has been announced as the final chance for teachers who could not clear or appear in earlier attempts. After this examination cycle, no further opportunity is expected to be provided under the current policy framework.
Categories of Teachers Eligible for the Final Competency Test
The fifth competency test will include two distinct categories of teacher candidates. This grouping has been defined to ensure inclusion of all pending cases from previous examination cycles. The eligible categories are explained below:
- 52,961 teachers who appeared in the earlier four competency tests but failed to qualify
- Approximately 30,000 teachers who were unable to appear in any of the previous four tests due to various reasons
In total, more than 82,000 teachers will be given this final opportunity to secure permanent state government employment.
Bihar Competency Test Failure Data from Previous Attempts
According to data released by the Bihar School Examination Board, a significant number of candidates were unable to clear the competency test in earlier cycles. This data highlights the scale of the issue faced by appointed teachers. The number of teachers who failed in each test is listed below:
- First competency test: 11,209 teachers
- Second competency test: 15,205 teachers
- Third competency test: 16,543 teachers
- Fourth competency test: 10,004 teachers
These figures form the basis for the decision to provide a final opportunity through the fifth examination.
Bihar Competency Test 2026 Exam Pattern and Syllabus
The fifth competency test will be conducted strictly as per the BPSC Teacher Recruitment Examination syllabus of Exams 1, 2, and 3. The question pattern will vary depending on the teaching level.
For Classes 1 to 5 teachers, the paper will include:
- 30 questions from language subjects
- 40 questions from general studies
- 80 questions from general subjects
For primary physical education teachers, the structure will be:
- 30 questions on language
- 40 questions on general studies
- 80 questions on physical education
Similarly, teachers of Classes 6 to 8, 9 to 10, and 11 to 12 will be assessed on:
- Language
- General studies
- Subject-specific content
The marks distribution for these categories will remain 30, 40, and 80 respectively.
