Ashoka University Expands Psychology Dept, Adds Cognitive Sciences

Ashoka University Expands Psychology Department To Include Cognitive Sciences. The university has restructured its psychology department to incorporate the interdisciplinary field of cognitive sciences. The move aims to strengthen research and teaching on human behaviour, learning processes, and brain functions. As part of the expansion, Professor Nandini Chatterjee Singh, a cognitive neuroscientist and science-policy researcher, has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences.

Ashoka University Introduces Department of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences

The expansion reflects a growing global trend where psychology increasingly integrates scientific and empirical methods to study the mind and behaviour. Cognitive science combines knowledge from multiple disciplines to better understand how people think, learn, regulate emotions, and make decisions. Cognitive science draws insights from fields such as:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Computer science and artificial intelligence
  • Linguistics and philosophy
  • Biology and anthropology

Through this interdisciplinary framework, researchers study cognitive processes such as perception, memory, reasoning, and behavioural responses.

Academic Focus On Data-Driven Research And Human Behaviour

According to the university, the newly expanded department will maintain a strong foundation in psychological science while introducing new academic pathways related to cognitive science.Students will be able to explore emerging research areas including:

  • Neuroscience of learning
  • Behavioural change studies
  • Brain health research
  • Cognitive science and human decision-making

Teaching and research activities will emphasise empirical methods, analytical tools, and real-world datasets, allowing students to engage with contemporary approaches to studying the human mind.

Cognitive Science Courses To Be Introduced Gradually

The university plans to introduce cognitive science through elective courses and academic concentrations within existing programmes. These offerings may later expand into more structured academic programmes depending on student demand and institutional development. University leadership noted that integrating cognitive science into the academic structure aligns with the institution’s focus on interdisciplinary learning and research innovation.

Leadership Of The New Department

Professor Nandini Chatterjee Singh brings extensive experience in cognitive neuroscience and science-policy research. Her work focuses on translating scientific findings from laboratory research into real-world applications, often through collaborations with policymakers, civil society organisations, and academic institutions. The expansion of the department is expected to enhance Ashoka University’s research ecosystem and prepare students to address complex challenges involving human cognition, behaviour, and learning in modern societies.
