Arunachal Pradesh Starts Second Medical College Project with 100 MBBS

Arunachal Pradesh has commenced the development of its second medical college in Namsai, aiming to expand medical education in the state. The project is expected to be completed over a period of seven years.

Details of the New Medical College in Namsai

Currently, Arunachal Pradesh has a single operational medical college — Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun. TRIHMS initially admitted 50 MBBS students, which was later increased to 100 seats. The upcoming Namsai medical college will be established by upgrading the existing district hospital. The development will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the state government inviting bids from eligible private partners.

Project Funding and Selection Process

The estimated cost of the Namsai project is ₹356.60 crore. Interested firms must comply with eligibility requirements set by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Union Ministry of Health. The selection of a private partner is underway through a formal bidding process.

Background and Future Plans

Chief Minister Pema Khandu first announced plans for the second medical college in November 2024. During an induction programme at TRIHMS, he stated that Namsai would host the new college, with a further college planned in Pasighat. Both projects are set to follow the PPP model, aiming to enhance healthcare education and infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh.
