Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan chaired the 3rd Consultative Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Teaching and Learning on December 19, 2025. The meeting focused on the growing role of AI in improving learning outcomes across school and higher education. Pradhan highlighted AI’s potential to make education more inclusive, accessible, and equitable, emphasizing government initiatives for student-centric and personalised learning.

 

AI Integration Aligned with NEP 2020

The committee discussed how AI is being systematically integrated into the Indian education ecosystem in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Key curriculum reforms include:

  • Age-appropriate computational thinking and AI literacy from the foundational stage
  • Increased focus on project-based learning
  • Formal inclusion of AI as a skill subject at the secondary level

These measures aim to enhance learning outcomes and address the diverse needs of learners and educators.

These initiatives provide personalised learning, multilingual access, teacher support, and real-time monitoring, ensuring that AI benefits both students and educators.

 

Focus on Higher Education, Research, and Employability

AI integration in higher education was also discussed to strengthen:

  • Teaching-learning processes
  • Research and innovation
  • Graduate employability

Officials highlighted AI-enabled curriculum updates in centrally funded institutions, integration of interdisciplinary and skill-based courses, and expansion of digital and physical infrastructure to support advanced research and learning. The goal is to produce future-ready graduates, foster innovation ecosystems, and maintain a globally competitive and inclusive higher education system. The committee concluded that AI has the potential to transform the Indian education system, making it more equitable, efficient, and student-focused, while aligning with global educational trends.
