Agniveer Service Extension 2026: Centre Announces 2-Year Extension Under Agnipath Scheme

The Union Cabinet has approved a two-year service extension for Agniveers under the Agnipath Scheme. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced the decision on November 4, 2026. The move will give the remaining 75% of Agniveers another opportunity to continue serving in the Armed Forces.

The extension will increase their potential service period from four to six years. Agniveers will also receive higher remuneration during the extended period.

What Are the Important Details of the Agniveer Service Extension 2026?

The table below covers the service extension, eligibility, revised tenure, salary changes and regular enrolment opportunities under the Agnipath Scheme.

What Has Changed Under the Agnipath Scheme?

Under the original scheme, Agniveers served for four years. After this period, 25% could be retained in the regular Armed Forces. The remaining 75% had to leave service.

The revised arrangement offers the remaining 75% an additional two-year engagement period. This will give them more time to gain military experience.

After completing six years, willing Agniveers can be considered for regular enrolment. They must meet the prescribed objective selection criteria.

Why Has the Government Announced a 2-Year Extension for Agniveers?

The decision follows the performance review of Agniveers during their four-year service. CDS General NS Raja Subramani said the Armed Forces received positive feedback about their performance.

The first batch of Agniveers is approaching the end of its four-year tenure. Around 18,000 personnel were expected to leave service by December 2026 under the earlier arrangement.

The detailed implementation rules and selection criteria are yet to be announced.

What Is the Agnipath Scheme?

The Union Government launched the Agnipath Scheme on June 14, 2022. It allows young people to serve in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force as Agniveers.
