In the final round of undergraduate (UG) admissions in West Bengal, approximately 63,000 seats across 460 colleges have been made available through the Centralised Admission Portal (CAP). This mop-up round comes after a significant number of vacancies remained unfilled following the first phase of admissions.
West Bengal UG Admission Final Round Details
The mop-up round was open to students from 10 to 13 September 2025, during which over one lakh students applied for admission. Out of these, 8,983 new registrations were recorded, showing a modest participation compared to total available seats. Many colleges, however, reported low enrollment, with several expecting less than 50% seat occupancy.
Factors Contributing to Low Enrollment
Officials cited delayed admission processes and procedural issues as key reasons behind the low uptake. Many students opted for other states or private colleges due to time constraints. Certain subjects, including Sanskrit, Electronics, and Philosophy, saw particularly low admission numbers.
College-Specific Admission Trends
Behala College, despite gaining autonomous status this year, managed to fill only half of its 1,000 seats. State higher education authorities noted that pending court matters and administrative delays also contributed to unfilled seats across multiple institutions.
Seat Vacancy Statistics and Classes Commencement
Following the first round, over 2 lakh seats remained vacant. Estimates suggest that more than 50% of the total 9.4 lakh UG seats in West Bengal could remain unfilled this academic year. Classes for admitted students are scheduled to begin on 25 September 2025.
