WBJEE 2026,Jadavpur University Seeks Separate BTech Counselling

Jadavpur University has proposed conducting its own counselling process for BTech admissions through WBJEE 2026 in order to avoid delays associated with the centralised counselling system. The proposal has been submitted to the West Bengal government and is currently awaiting approval. The university’s Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology recently discussed the issue and recommended that the institute be allowed to organise an independent counselling process immediately after the announcement of WBJEE results.

Why Jadavpur University Wants Separate WBJEE Counselling?

Officials say the proposal aims to ensure that admissions to BTech programmes begin earlier and that the academic schedule is not disrupted by delays in the existing centralised process. The university has cited several concerns regarding delayed admissions in recent years. Key reasons for the proposal include:

  • Delayed publication of WBJEE results and counselling schedule
  • Late start of the centralised counselling process
  • Difficulty starting academic sessions on time
  • High-ranking students choosing other institutions due to delays

University authorities believe that an earlier counselling process would allow classes to begin sooner and help attract meritorious candidates

Current WBJEE Counselling System for Engineering Admissions

At present, the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) conducts a centralised online counselling process for engineering admissions across the state. The centralised system covers several institutions, including:

  • Jadavpur University
  • Calcutta University
  • Government engineering colleges
  • Private engineering institutes in West Bengal

Admissions to BTech programmes are allocated based on WBJEE ranks and seat availability through multiple counselling rounds. After the completion of these rounds, individual institutions may conduct additional counselling to fill any remaining vacant seats.

Proposal Sent to State Government for Approval

The proposal for separate counselling was initially approved by the university’s Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology. It will also be discussed by the university’s Executive Council, which is the institution’s highest decision-making body. If the executive council endorses the proposal, the university will seek final permission from the West Bengal education department before implementing the plan. Officials have clarified that no final decision has been taken yet, and the proposal remains under consideration by the state government.

WBJEE 2026 Exam and Admission Timeline

WBJEE is a state-level entrance examination for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in West Bengal. Thousands of candidates appear for the exam every year to secure seats in participating institutions. For the upcoming admission cycle:

  • WBJEE 2026 application process: Started on 10 March 2026
  • Last date to apply: 5 April 2026
  • WBJEE 2026 exam date: 24 May 2026

The state government’s decision on Jadavpur University’s proposal will determine whether the institute can introduce a separate counselling process for the 2026 BTech admission cycle or continue with the existing centralised system.
