The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for two new government medical colleges in Kerala’s Wayanad and Kasaragod districts. Each college will admit 50 MBBS students starting this academic year. Congress leader and newly elected MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hailed the development as a "long-cherished dream come true" for the people of Wayanad.
Infrastructure Preparedness and Institutional Setup
Below is a snapshot of the infrastructure and readiness status for the newly approved colleges:
- Wayanad's infrastructure also includes a dedicated sickle-cell unit and an angioplasty-enabled cath lab—enhancing rural healthcare significantly.
- In Kasaragod, outpatient departments across multiple specialties and e-Sanjeevani telemedicine now operate, with staffing already in place.
Priyanka Gandhi Welcomes the Development
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi expressed her gratitude, stating that the "earnest requests of lakhs of people of Wayanad" and sustained efforts by local leadership and her brother, Rahul Gandhi, have yielded results. She urged the Kerala government to expedite construction and ensure the colleges become operational at the earliest, calling it a milestone in enhancing healthcare access in tribal and rural areas.
