UPSC Ensures Preferred Exam Centres for Differently-Abled Candidates

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has introduced a significant accessibility reform for differently-abled candidates. All candidates with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) will now be allotted their preferred examination centres for all UPSC recruitment exams. This initiative aims to reduce travel and accessibility challenges while ensuring a fair examination environment. The reform follows a five-year analysis of UPSC centre-allocation data, which highlighted repeated difficulties faced by PwBD aspirants due to early filling of popular centres. This move is expected to enhance accessibility and convenience for candidates appearing in national-level exams.

UPSC Accessibility Reforms for PwBD Candidates

UPSC’s reform guarantees that every differently-abled candidate will receive the exam centre of their choice. Previously, popular centres such as Delhi, Patna, Lucknow, and Cuttack filled up quickly, leaving limited options for PwBD aspirants. Many candidates had to travel long distances to appear for exams, adding unnecessary stress and logistical challenges. This decision aligns with UPSC’s commitment to promoting fairness and inclusivity. The Commission has highlighted that the reform will help candidates focus on preparation and performance without worrying about travel difficulties.

Impact on Recruitment Exams

To understand the significance, consider the previous system:

  • PwBD candidates often received distant or inconvenient centres.
  • Popular centres reached capacity faster than less demanded ones.
  • Candidates had limited choice, affecting accessibility and exam readiness.

With the reform, all PwBD candidates will have guaranteed access to their preferred centres, ensuring maximum convenience. This is expected to reduce absenteeism and improve exam experience for thousands of aspirants annually.

UPSC Statement and Future Steps

UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar stated that this reform ensures “maximum convenience and ease” for differently-abled candidates while appearing for national-level recruitment exams. The Commission emphasised that the change will directly address travel, accessibility, and logistical barriers. By implementing this measure, UPSC has strengthened its focus on equality, inclusivity, and transparency in recruitment exams. Aspirants can now plan their preparation and participation without concerns about centre allocation.
