The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to integrate SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into academic programmes for the July 2026 semester. Institutions have been asked to identify relevant courses, complete the credit transfer process, and ensure students register within the prescribed deadlines.

UGC Directs HEIs to Integrate SWAYAM MOOCs for July Semester 2026

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the country to integrate SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into their academic curriculum for the July 2026 semester. Universities and colleges have been asked to identify suitable online courses, complete the credit transfer framework, and ensure eligible students register before the respective deadlines announced by the national coordinators. The latest directive aims to strengthen the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting flexible learning, multidisciplinary education, and academic mobility through online courses offered on the SWAYAM platform.

UGC Guidelines for SWAYAM MOOCs in July 2026 Semester

The UGC has instructed universities and colleges to actively integrate approved SWAYAM courses with their existing academic programmes instead of treating them as optional learning resources. The commission has also asked institutions to involve Deans, Heads of Departments, and SWAYAM University Nodal Officers (UNOs) in implementing the academic integration process. According to the commission, institutions should:

  • Identify relevant SWAYAM MOOCs aligned with existing curricula.
  • Complete mapping of online courses with academic programmes.
  • Finalise the credit transfer mechanism.
  • Encourage students to register before the deadlines.
  • Publish the approved list of SWAYAM courses on institutional websites and social media platforms.

SWAYAM Credit Transfer Under UGC Regulations

The latest direction has been issued under the UGC Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM Regulations. The regulations permit HEIs to allow students to earn up to 40% of the total credits in a semester through approved SWAYAM online courses, provided they are integrated into the institution's curriculum. Before the table below, institutions should note that the regulations allow greater academic flexibility through recognised online courses.

SWAYAM July 2026 Registration Deadlines

The UGC has also shared registration timelines for courses offered by different national coordinators under the SWAYAM platform. Before referring to the schedule, students should check the deadlines applicable to their chosen course and coordinator.

Responsibilities Assigned to Higher Education Institutions

The commission has outlined several responsibilities that universities and colleges must complete before the commencement of the July semester. These measures are intended to ensure that online learning becomes an integral part of the academic curriculum rather than an optional add-on. Institutions are expected to:

  • Circulate the approved SWAYAM course list among departments.
  • Organise meetings of SWAYAM advisory committees.
  • Align MOOCs with existing degree programmes.
  • Approve the credit transfer framework.
  • Inform students about available courses and registration deadlines.
  • Publish the final list of integrated courses on official platforms.

How SWAYAM Supports NEP 2020?

SWAYAM, the Government of India's national online learning platform, offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, engineering, management, teacher education, and skill-based courses. Students enrolled in approved SWAYAM courses can earn academic credits that may be transferred to their parent institution, subject to university regulations. The platform supports the objectives of NEP 2020 by:

  • Promoting multidisciplinary education.
  • Increasing academic flexibility.
  • Expanding learner choice.
  • Supporting digital learning.
  • Enabling recognised academic credit transfer.

Impact of the UGC Directive

The latest directive shifts the focus from merely encouraging students to enrol in online courses to formally integrating SWAYAM MOOCs into university curricula. By mapping online courses with existing academic programmes, universities can provide students with greater flexibility in learning while maintaining recognised academic standards. Institutions are expected to complete the integration process before the commencement of the July 2026 semester, ensuring that eligible students can benefit from online learning opportunities and credit mobility.
