Tamil Nadu’s New School Curriculum Launches from 2027 Under SEP

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has initiated the development of a new curriculum for its government schools, set to be introduced in the academic year 2027-28. A high-level committee has been formed under the leadership of School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi to direct this process.

Scope of the Curriculum Change Across All Grades

According to School Education Secretary B. Chandra Mohan, the upcoming curriculum revision will cover all classes across government schools in Tamil Nadu. The effort comes after the release of the state’s own education policy, reflecting a move to develop an education system aligned with the state’s objectives rather than the central policy.

Key Committees and Their Roles

The curriculum framing process is supported by two main bodies:

  • The State Council of Educational Research and Training (TN) (SCERT), which has been conducting consultations since last year.
  • A Programme Design Committee headed by noted educationist Prof. Sultan Ahmed Ismail, tasked with structuring programmes to ensure effective implementation.

Focus Areas of the Curriculum Revision

The curriculum redesign will emphasise the following key areas:

  • Reviewing syllabus content for relevance and coherence.
  • Updating teaching approaches to support competency-based learning.
  • Reforming assessment methods to better reflect learning outcomes.
  • Involving teachers, students, parents and education experts to make the framework inclusive.
  • Officials stated that the objective is to bridge the gap between teaching intent and actual learning while retaining Tamil Nadu’s socio-cultural context in education.

Timeline and Implications for Government Schools

The revised curriculum is expected to be rolled out from the 2027-28 academic year. Schools, teachers and stakeholders must prepare for changes in pedagogy, assessment and classroom engagement accordingly. This initiative marks a significant step by Tamil Nadu to assert an independent state-level education framework distinct from the central policy. Educators and administrators are advised to monitor official announcements on teacher training, syllabus documents and implementation guidelines in the lead-up to the launch.
