The Supreme Court of India has directed the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to file an affidavit within two weeks explaining its policy regarding the publication of NEET PG 2025 answer keys. The Court clarified that the ongoing NEET PG 2025 counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC)will continue as per schedule since no interim stay has been issued.
NEET PG 2025 Counselling to Proceed as Planned
With no change in the schedule, the MCC will proceed with the NEET PG 2025 counselling process for postgraduate medical admissions. The Court stated that the case proceedings will not interfere with the counselling timeline or seat allotment process.
Supreme Court Seeks Transparency from NBEMS
A Bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Vipul M. Pancholi heard a set of petitions filed by NEET PG candidates demanding greater transparency in the evaluation process. The petitioners contended that NBEMS only releases question IDs instead of full question papers, answer keys, or candidates’ responses, preventing proper verification of marks.
During the hearing, the Court questioned NBEMS on whether a formal policy exists for withholding answer keys. NBEMS stated that candidates sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) before the examination and that the current practice is based on convention rather than a written rule.
Court References UPSC’s Transparency Model
The Bench also referred to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) model, which publishes provisional answer keys to ensure accountability in public examinations. The judges asked whether NBEMS could adopt a similar framework for NEET PG to enhance fairness and trust among candidates.
While recognizing the need for transparency, the Court clarified that it would not, at this stage, consider individual grievances about exam conduct or evaluation. Its focus remains on reviewing the policy framework adopted by NBEMS.
The next hearing is scheduled after two weeks, following the submission of NBEMS’s affidavit. Until then, the MCC will continue NEET PG 2025 counselling as planned.
