Sub-Zero Temps in Kashmir Trigger Winter Vacation for Schools

The Jammu & Kashmir School Education Department has announced winter vacations for all schools in Kashmir following a week of sub-zero temperatures across the valley. The decision affects both government and recognized private schools up to higher secondary level. Pre-primary classes will begin winter vacation from November 26, 2025 to February 28, 2026, while other classes will follow a staggered schedule:

  • Classes 1–8: Winter break starts December 1, 2025
  • Classes 9–12: Winter break starts December 11, 2025

“All teaching faculty shall remain available for any academic activity during the vacation period,” the department’s order stated.

Morning fog has been reported throughout the valley, with mostly dry weather forecasted over the next few days. Cloudy conditions and light snowfall are expected in mountainous areas on December 2, 2025.

Impact on Students and Schools

The early closure of schools aims to safeguard students from harsh weather conditions while allowing schools to manage academic activities in a controlled manner. The staggered vacation ensures continuity of administrative and academic responsibilities. Icicles and frost were observed on trees and structures in tourist towns such as Pahalgam, reflecting the extreme winter chill that has settled over the valley.
