SNDT Women’s University, India’s First Women’s University Established in 1916

SNDT Women’s University holds the distinction of being the first women’s university in India as well as in South-East Asia, established with the mission of expanding access to higher education for women. Founded in 1916 by social reformer Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve, the university was created to empower women through education at a time when female participation in higher studies was extremely limited.

Historic Beginnings and Growth of SNDT Women’s University

SNDT Women’s University, officially known as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University, began its journey as a pioneering institution dedicated entirely to women’s education. The first batch of women graduated in 1921, marking an important milestone in advancing women’s access to university-level education. Headquartered at the Churchgate campus in Mumbai, the university has expanded over the years to include additional campuses at Juhu (Mumbai), Karve Road (Pune), Chandrapur, and Shrivardhan, offering a wide range of academic programmes. Over the last century, the university has evolved into a multidisciplinary institution, providing courses from early education through postgraduate and doctoral programmes across fields including liberal arts, sciences, commerce, education, technology, and vocational studies.

Legacy and Contribution to Women’s Education

SNDT Women’s University’s establishment marked a turning point in India’s educational history by championing women’s right to higher learning at a societal level. The institution’s motto — “An enlightened woman is a source of infinite strength” — reflects its enduring commitment to women’s empowerment. Today, the university serves tens of thousands of students, with extensive research facilities, centres for women’s studies, and affiliated colleges across India. Its focus on inclusive education has influenced similar initiatives nationwide and contributed significantly to female participation in academia.
