Schools, Colleges Closed in Delhi, Bihar, UP, Jharkhand for Puja

Several states, including Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, observed a holiday on October 27, 2025, for Chhath Puja. The festival, dedicated to the Sun God, is one of the most important celebrations in eastern India. The respective state governments issued orders declaring a public holiday to allow citizens to participate in the rituals.

 

Delhi Schools and Colleges Remain Closed for Chhath Puja 2025

In the national capital, all government and private schools, along with colleges, remained closed on Monday. The order was approved by the Lieutenant Governor following the Chief Minister’s proposal to declare a holiday for Chhath Puja. Around 1,300 Chhath ghats were prepared across Delhi to accommodate devotees offering evening prayers to the setting Sun. Authorities made elaborate arrangements to ensure the safety and convenience of participants at major ghats such as ITO, Kalindi Kunj, and Wazirabad. Delhi Police and civic bodies were also deployed to manage the gatherings.

 

Bihar Declares Extended School Holiday Till October 29

The Bihar Education Department announced an extended holiday covering both Diwali and Chhath Puja. Schools and higher education institutes in the state remained closed till October 29, with regular classes scheduled to resume from October 30. This decision aimed to facilitate the participation of families in Chhath rituals, which hold deep cultural significance across the state. The main offerings, known as Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya, were observed on October 27 and 28, respectively.

 

Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand Schools Closed on October 27

District officials in major Uttar Pradesh cities such as Varanasi, Gorakhpur, and Lucknow also declared a one-day holiday on October 27. In some areas, the break extended to October 28, depending on local customs. Similarly, local administrations in Jharkhand and parts of West Bengal followed suit. Schools and colleges in Ranchi, Dhanbad, and Asansol remained closed on Monday and reopened on Tuesday.

 

Chhath Puja Holiday Advisory for Students and Parents

Students and parents were advised to stay informed through their respective school authorities as some private institutions followed independent schedules. Chhath Puja, celebrated with devotion and discipline, is dedicated to worshipping the Sun God and thanking nature for sustaining life. The festival involves rituals performed near rivers and ponds, with devotees offering prayers for prosperity and well-being. This year’s Chhath Puja witnessed large gatherings across several states, reflecting the deep-rooted cultural importance of the festival in India’s eastern and northern regions.
