The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has officially taken over the responsibility of conducting the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment exam from the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). The move, effective from 2025, aims to make the recruitment process more transparent and efficient. Previously managed under the Ministry of Railways, the RPF SI and Constable exams will now follow SSC’s standardized procedures, bringing them in line with the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) recruitment framework.
Annual Recruitment Cycle Introduced
Starting in 2025, both RPF SI and RPF Constable recruitment will be conducted annually. The decision is expected to reduce long waiting periods between recruitment cycles and ensure a steady flow of new appointments across the force. Officials stated that SSC’s involvement will help streamline operations and implement consistent evaluation standards, benefiting candidates across all railway zones.
Revised RPF SI Selection Process
Under the new framework, the RPF SI selection process will comprise three main stages: a Computer-Based Test (CBT), followed by Physical Efficiency and Measurement Tests (PET/PMT), and finally a medical examination. Detailed Selection Stages:
Candidates qualifying each stage will proceed to document verification before the final merit list is released.
Revised Physical Standards and Age Criteria
The Ministry of Railways has also introduced RPF Revised Recruitment Rules 2025, which include notable changes to physical standards and age limits for candidates.
Key Updates:
- Age Limit:
- For Constable (Executive), the upper age limit has been reduced from 25 years to 23 years.
- Physical Standards (Male):
- Height: Increased from 165 cm to 170 cm
- Chest (unexpanded/expanded): 80 cm / 85 cm
- Physical Standards (Female):
- Height and endurance criteria remain aligned with CAPF norms.
These modifications are aimed at maintaining uniformity with national-level paramilitary forces and improving overall fitness standards in the RPF.
Objective Behind the Reform
According to officials, the transition to SSC is part of a broader initiative to modernize the recruitment process within the RPF. The new structure focuses on fairness, consistency, and timely examinations, addressing long-standing concerns about irregular recruitment cycles. The inclusion of CAPF medical and fitness benchmarks ensures that newly appointed officers meet the same physical and psychological readiness standards as other central forces.
Official Notification and Further Updates
The official notification regarding the revised recruitment process and eligibility criteria was released by the Ministry of Railways earlier this month. The SSC is expected to announce the detailed RPF SI Recruitment 2025 notification soon on its official website —ssc.gov.in. Candidates are advised to keep track of SSC updates for exam dates, application forms, and detailed guidelines.
