President of India Droupadi Murmu addressed the 20th Convocation Ceremony of Kumaun University, Nainital, on Tuesday, emphasizing that education should not be limited to academic achievement but should nurture humility, compassion, and service to the nation. Speaking at the ceremony, President Murmu said that true education empowers individuals to become self-reliant while inspiring them to contribute to the development of society and the nation. She described education as the cornerstone of a progressive nation and urged students to dedicate their knowledge and skills to the betterment of underprivileged communities. “Education not only makes us self-reliant but also inspires us to contribute to the development of society and the country,” President Murmu remarked. She added that the highest purpose of education is to spread happiness and fulfillment through service, which she termed as the true form of religion.
Focus on Youth, Innovation, and Nation-Building
Highlighting India’s steady economic growth, President Murmu noted that the country continues to be among the fastest-growing major economies in the world. She credited policy reforms and government initiatives for creating new opportunities for young people and encouraged universities to guide students toward innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development. She appreciated Kumaun University’s efforts in promoting research, innovation, and multidisciplinary learning. The President expressed confidence that the institution would continue to strengthen its role in shaping a knowledge-driven society.
Environmental Responsibility and Social Engagement
President Murmu also spoke about Uttarakhand’s natural heritage, noting that the Himalayas are a lifeline for the region. She praised the university’s environmental initiatives and urged the academic community to remain actively engaged in conservation and sustainability. Encouraging students and faculty to take part in community outreach, she advised them to visit nearby villages, understand local challenges, and collaborate on practical solutions that align with the nation’s vision of sustainable progress.
Vision for a Developed India by 2047
Concluding her address, President Murmu emphasized the vital role of India’s youth in achieving the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047. She urged students to harness their talent, creativity, and sense of responsibility to build a prosperous and self-reliant India. Earlier in the day, the President visited the Naina Devi Temple and offered prayers before proceeding to the Shri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram at Kainchi Dham.
