Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that IIM Bangalore will establish its first international campus in Indonesia. The new campus will initially offer executive education programmes before introducing full-time degree courses in the coming years.
IIM Bangalore is set to establish its first international campus in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the institute's global expansion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the initiative during his official visit to Indonesia following bilateral discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The announcement came as India and Indonesia strengthened their strategic partnership by signing multiple cooperation agreements across sectors including education, technology, healthcare, food security, maritime security and pharmaceuticals. The proposed overseas campus is expected to expand access to Indian management education for students and professionals across Southeast Asia.
IIM Bangalore Indonesia Campus: Location and Academic Plans
The upcoming international campus will be established at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, East Java, a region being developed as an education and technology hub. With this development, IIM Bangalore will become the second Indian Institute of Management to establish an overseas campus, following IIM Ahmedabad's international presence in Dubai. According to the announcement, the campus will adopt a phased academic approach. During the initial years, the institute will focus on executive education and professional development before expanding into full-fledged management degree programmes. The campus is expected to offer:
- Executive education programmes for working professionals.
- Leadership and management training for senior executives.
- Specialised courses for government officials and policymakers.
- Professional development programmes for business leaders.
- Full-time management degree programmes after the initial establishment phase.
This phased rollout is intended to build institutional capacity while responding to the growing demand for internationally recognised management education in the ASEAN region.
Focus Areas of the New International Campus
The proposed academic curriculum will reflect emerging industry requirements and global business trends. Students enrolled at the Indonesia campus are expected to receive training in several high-demand domains that are reshaping business and management education. The planned areas of study include:
- Artificial Intelligence and Business Applications
- Healthcare Management
- Digital Transformation
- Climate Change and Sustainability
- Global Supply Chain Management
- Technology and Innovation Management
By incorporating these contemporary subjects, the institute aims to prepare graduates and professionals for leadership roles in rapidly evolving industries.
India–Indonesia Educational Cooperation Strengthens
The establishment of the IIM Bangalore campus forms part of broader educational and strategic cooperation between India and Indonesia. During the bilateral engagements, both countries signed nearly a dozen agreements covering multiple sectors, reflecting a growing partnership beyond trade and diplomacy. The collaborations announced during the visit include:
- Higher education and academic collaboration
- Technology and innovation
- Healthcare and pharmaceutical cooperation
- Food security initiatives
- Space research
- Defence cooperation
- Maritime security
The proposed international campus is expected to serve students not only from Indonesia but also from other ASEAN nations seeking globally relevant management education with an Indian academic framework.
Significance for Students and Management Education
The expansion represents another step in the internationalisation of India's higher education ecosystem. Establishing overseas campuses allows Indian institutions to increase their global presence, strengthen academic collaborations and provide greater access to management education outside the country. For aspiring management professionals across Southeast Asia, the new campus is expected to create additional opportunities to pursue programmes designed around international business practices, emerging technologies and sustainable leadership. Once full-time degree programmes begin after the initial executive education phase, the campus is likely to become an important centre for management education in the region.
